| Membership of the BASW Renal Special Interest Group is
open to all social workers attached to renal Units throughout the United
Kingdom. As renal failure is a life-long condition, with complex psycho-social
implications, social work with renal patients and their families frequently
requires long-term involvement. This group is committed to the highest standards of social work practice, deeming traditional social casework/counselling skills to be of crucial importance in empowering and offering support to this client group. We support wholeheartedly a proposed three year training course for all social workers, which must include a grounding in counselling skills. Additional post qualification courses and training in areas of complex need are necessary. We applaud the NHS and Community Care Act 1990, which gave primary importance to the client-centred approach and the provision of needs-led services. We deplore the fact that underfunding and a finance-led approach has resulted in an overwhelming and time-consuming bureaucracy, which has diverted social workers from skilled psychosocial intervention into repetitive paperwork. This job description advocates a standard of excellence to which we aspire and on which we will not compromise.
